Dr Sally Nobbs, OAM - Chairperson I was lucky enough to go on the first Wilderness School Nepal Trek in 1998, when I fell under the spell of the Himalayan mountains and the people of Nepal. I have since returned to Nepal many times, co-ordinating treks for students and for the wider Wilderness Community. It has been a privilege to introduce so many people - students and adults - to the wonders and challenges of Nepal, but also to help facilitate a philanthropic giving of our community in Adelaide to others less fortunate in Nepal - helping make a difference. It was in 2005 that the relationship with the members of the community's of Bhadure (in the Annapurna Region) and Junbesi (in the Everest Region) was established, and has been built on ever since, whether it has been supporting the education of girls at the Shree Bahadure Secondary School, through scholarships and the establishment of a Boarding School for girls, or improving health outcomes for women and girls at the Kushudebu Public Health Mission. None of this was planned; it has grown almost organically, touching people's lives in many different ways. As the secretary, with a background in law and finance, I helped with the establishment phase, but it was my first visit to Nepal in 2016 which really hooked me. I visited Bahadure and Junbesi and was impressed with the extent of the work which had already been done and the close friendship and trust which had developed between our communities. I first visited for a one-off trek in 2007 and haven’t been able to stay away since! I completely fell in love with the local people and their culture and the magnificent mountains. After the earthquakes I was fortunate enough to travel back with Sally to visit Junbesi and surrounding areas to see where we could be of assistance to help rebuild, and I was truly overwhelmed by their strength and resilience , we all can learn from the Nepalese communities. My on-site role in Nepal of assisting a dedicated medical, dental and nursing team with logistics so they could carry out their important medical work was also a lot of fun. I’m pleased to be able to assist in any way and look forward to adventures in the future. In the meantime, there’s work to be done in preparation for further medical clinics in the Himalayas. My professional experience and education places me in a position to positively contribute to Wilderness in Nepal Ltd, and diligently help the organisation to achieve its mission and goals as well as facilitate community development projects. Our affiliation with Wilderness School also ensures these students have the opportunity to participate firsthand in community service initiatives. I have sponsored several students now and continue to sponsor a university student in Pokhara. The impact that education has had for this student has been quite profound, and she continues to forge ahead with further study to achieve her goals. In 2018 I was fortunate to attend the medical clinic at Junbesi, and saw first-hand the impact that such services and support can provide to the local community. Following this trip, I was very proud to accept a Director position with WIN and am looking forward to many more trips to Nepal. I have a strong commitment to fostering development and autonomy, and believe that WIN can offer some incredible opportunities for furthering growth and sustainability in these communities. It was an honour and privilege in 2008, to get invited to Australia for launching the book “Wilderness in Nepal”. My involvement in projects and treks has continually grown with each community trip made by WIN. I am so grateful to be involved in this story and am inspired by the support that WIN has provided to the Junbesi and Bahadure communities, and the difference being made in peoples lives. It is a humbling experience to see the positive impacts of WIN in our community. I was honoured to be appointed as in-country representative of WIN’s board in November 2020 and it is a great opportunity for me to work with the WIN team.
